Jackpot. Chapter 14
THE END. José leans back in his chair and breathes a happy sigh. At long last, the screenplay is finished. He looks out at the sun-soaked gardens and basks in the moment. He still has a long road ahead of him before he’s free, but this chapter is over. Leon returns from the bathroom and sees the page.
“It’s done?”
José nods, grinning wide.
“Right then.” Leon takes the pages from the typewriter, sits down at his desk, and starts reading.
“I’ll be back.”
“Mm.”
José leaves and goes outside to have a smoke. He gazes at the lamp he and Leroy made their fateful pact beneath and watches a butterfly flutter by and land on a sculpted vine, perhaps mistaking it for a real flower.
When he gets back, Leon’s finished reading. He’s staring into space, oblivious to José’s return.
“Well?”
Leon gently emerges from his reverie, blinking in blissful confusion. “José…” He trails off.
José waits.
“José, this script… won’t be needing any revisions.”
